These species are filter feeders (also known as suspension feeders). They can feed by straining plankton, suspended matter or other small food particles from water as they swim with their mouths open, typically by passing it over a specialized filtering structures in their oral cavity and gills. They usually have comparatively large mouths compared with plankton suction-feeder.
