Extensible mouth

About this Tag

These species have a mouth that is characterized by a mobile articulation of the upper jaw with the skull. Therefore, when the mouth is open the upper jaw may be thrust forward. A mouth of this type is characteristic of fishes that primarily feed on small items such as plankton and small benthos or detritus.
