About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:
Found over rocky reefs and around kelp forests (near the bottom), also inhabit caves and shipwrecks (hence the name), to depths of 800 m or more.
Remarks:
The dorsal fin of wreckfishes has strong spines and the opercle usually has a horizontal ridge with a short spine posteriorly. These species eat crabs, lobsters and other fishes. They are considered excellent foodfishes.
The family polyprionidae consists of two genera (Polyprion and Stereolepis), and five species.
