About This Family
Distribution:
Labrisomids are found primarily in the Neotropics and warm temperate areas of the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic as well as in the eastern Atlantic.
Habitat:
Labrisomids are found on hard substrates such as tidepools, rocky reefs or coral reefs, but some species occur in seagrass beds or take shelter inside sponges.
Remarks:
Unlike other groups of blennioids, they are difficult to define using anatomical features and may not represent a natural (monophyletic) group. Females of most labrisomids attach eggs to the substrate within the territories of males, but Starksia and relatives have internal fertilization and females brood eggs within their bodies.
The Labrisomidae includes just over 100 species in 14 genera.
