About This Family
Distribution:
North Pacific from Alaska to northern Mexico, and off Russia and Japan.
Habitat:
Usually well offshore, over soft substrate and near the bottom in depths from 200 to 2,740 m.
Remarks:
Although scorpaeniform fishes, sablefishes are unusual in lacking spines, ridges or cirri on the head. However, both species in this family have the diagnostic scorpaeniform character: the bony suborbital stay. They typically feed on crustaceans, cephalopods, worms and other fishes.
