About This Family
Distribution:
Worldwide.
Habitat:
Marine waters, from the littoral to the deep sea, with most species found at shelf depths, commonly on rocky bottoms and coral reefs.
Remarks:
Most, if not all, Scorpaenids have venom glands associated with the fin-spines, giving the group its common name. The venom ranges from highly toxic for stonefish to hardly toxic for rockfish. The Stonefish, found on coral reefs in the Indo-West Pacific can deliver serious wounds, with known fatalities. One genus, Sebastes, has almost 100 species in the North Pacific, many of which are sympatric.
This diverse family contains at least 56 genera with 418 species.
