Remarks:
The family Protopteridae is found in Africa and is known to for their ability to bury in the mud during dry spells, when water bodies dry up. These fishes are capable of secreting large amount of mucous that forms a cocoon. The African lungfishes enveloped in this mucous cocoon for several months during the dry season to stay alive.
This family consists of one genus, Protopterus, with four species.
