Remarks:
The South American lungfishes have an extremely elongated body and filamentous pectorals. They are capable of spending a hot, dry season in an inactive, dormant state by burrowing in a mud hole and enveloped in a self-made mucous cocoon. These fishes usually inhabit in slow-moving body of fresh waters and swamps.
This family comprises one species, Lepidosiren paradoxa .
