About This Family
Distribution:
Southeast Queensland, Australia
Habitat:
Freshwater
Remarks:
Australian lungfishes are found exclusively in gentle-flowing river systems of south-eastern Queensland. Instead of having paired lungs like the South American and African lungfishes, they only have a single lung, thus making it difficult for them to survive during dry periods. These fishes are also distinguished from other lungfishes by having pectoral and pelvic fins shaped like a paddle.
This family comprises only one species, Neoceratodus forsteri.
