About This Family
Distribution:
Temperate to tropical; circumglobal.
Habitat:
Continental and insular shelves and slopes.
Remarks:
Cat sharks have their first dorsal fin base opposite or behind pelvic fin base (in front of pelvic fin base in all others); nictitating eyelids rudimentary; spiracles present; and intestine with spiral valve.
Maximum length at least 1.6m.
The Scyliorhinidae family contains 16 genera and approximately 44 species.
