About This Family
Distribution:
Western North Atlantic (between Florida and Cuba) and Indo-West Pacific.
Habitat:
Marine, warm temperate to tropical, continental shelves and slopes.
Remarks:
The Finback catsharks are small, harmless deep-sea sharks occurring in the warm temperate to tropical waters. They have an elongate body, catlike eyes with nictitating eyelids, and two small, spineless dorsal fins and anal fin. These sharks typically feed on small fishes and invertebrates.
The family Proscyliidae is comprised of three genera, Ctenacis, Eridacnis, and Proscyllium, with five species.
