About This Family
Distribution:
Southern Hemisphere: (southern South America, New Zealand, southern Australia, and southern Africa)
Habitat:
Marine, continental and insular shelves and uppermost slopes.
Remarks:
Plownose chimaeras, also known as elephant chimaeras, have a distinctive elongate, flexible, hook-like snout, resembling the head of an elephant. Chimeras have small eyes and a tail with a long upper lobe and a shorter lower lobe.
The family consists of one genus, Callorhinchus, with three species.
