About This Family
Remarks:
The gonostomatids, or bristlemouths, occur worldwide and have slender, elongate bodies. Their mouths are wide and large, with long jaws containing numerous sharp teeth in a single row. Most of the species have light organs on the underside of the body. The genus Cyclothone, with 12 species, is overwhelmingly abundant in the open sea and remains an important prey for many larger fishes.
This family contains five genera and about 23 species.
