Remarks:
Distributed in the tropical waters of South America, Banjo catfishes live in freshwater but occasionally can be found in brackish waters. Their bodies are depressed anteriorly and are mostly naked except for tubercles arranged in longitudinal rows; adipose fin absent; caudal fin with 10 or less rays.
Although most species are less than 15 cm, Banjo catfishes can grow to a maximum length of 38 cm.
This family comprises of twelve genera with about 36 species.
