Distribution:
Northern Hemisphere.
Habitat:
Freshwater and anadromous.
Remarks:
These popular, well-known fishes such as salmons, trouts, charrs, and whitefishes belong in the Salmonidae family. These predatory fishes are mostly slim, with rayless fin on the back between the rayed dorsal and the tail. The pelvic fins are located along the mid body, while the pectoral fins are located low on the body. The obvious differences between the salmons and the coregonines are their jaws and scales. Salmons have well-developed teeth and small scales as compared to coregonines which have small or no teeth and large scales. Many species are anadromous, migrating up rivers and streams from the sea to spawn in freshwater.
The Salmonidae family contains three subfamilies (Coregonidae, Thymallidae, Salmoninae) with 11 genera and 66 species.
