Marine; freshwater; tropical and subtropical seas.
Some are found in rivers, others in deep water.

Distributed worldwide in warm temperate waters, tongue fishes, also known as flatfishes, occur in shallow water or estuaries. Some species from the subfamily Symphurinae are found in deep sea floors, depth range between 300 – 1,900 m. Their small, tightly-close eyes are located on the left side; dorsal and anal fins blend with the pointed caudal fin; they have undeveloped right pelvic fin and lack pectoral fins. The swim bladder is absent.
Max length is usually below 30 cm.
The family contains three genera with about 127 species, including two subfamilies, Symphurinae and Cynoglossinae.
