About This Family
Distribution:
Indo-Pacific.
Habitat:
Marine; frequent mostly in coral-reef areas.
Remarks:
The Zanclidae family primarily inhabits coral-reef areas in tropical Indo-Pacific. The Moorish Idols are distinguished for their elongated dorsal fin whip-like filament and extended snout with numerous bristle-like teeth for foraging for invertebrates and algae in small crevices.
This family consists of only one species, Zanclus cornutus.
