About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:
They dwell on the reef’s surface, algae-covered rocks, or on rubble.
Remarks:
The triplefins get their name from the division of the dorsal fin into three segments, with the first two are spinous, and the third has seven or less soft rays. Although there are relatively few species in the Atlantic, the Tripeterygiidae family, known as the triplefin bennies, is abundance in the Indo-West Pacific.
They lack anal fin spines and have rough-edge scales. Maximum size is 25 cm.
The Tripterygiidae family contains about 23 genera and 150 species.
