Distribution:
Eastern Pacific: southern California to Peru.
Habitat:
Marine
Remarks:
Roosterfishes have compressed, elongate body, medium round eyes, and pointed head. They are characterized by having a dorsal fin with 7 very long spines. Their pectorals are longer than pelvic fins. Body has small, smooth scales and 4 dark bars on head and body with the last two bars positioned diagonally.
This family comprises one single species, Nematistius pectoralis.
