About This Family
Distribution:
Southern Hemisphere (parts of Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans) and Northern Hemisphere (off Japan, China and Hawaiian Islands).
Habitat:
Marine; subtropical and temperate coastal waters.
Remarks:
Morwongs are usually compressed and elongate with small mouths and thick lips. They have one continuous or almost separate dorsal fin, with 14-22 spines and 19-39 soft rays. Morwongs have no teeth in vomer and palatines and primarily feed on small benthic invertebrates. These solitary fishes typically hide in holes at night.
Maximum length about 1.0 m.
The family consists of five genera with about 22 species.
