Remarks:
The Crocodile icefishes are a relatively small marine family occurring in the Antarctic and southern South America. They possess a pointed and depressed mouth, spinous dorsal fin present, large and elongate pelvic fin and 22-31 vertebrae. Most species have colorless blood due to lacking red blood cells. The Channichthyidids can survive in extremely cold, well-oxygenated water. These fishes can grow to a maximum length of 75 cm.
This family consists of eleven genera with about 15 species.
