Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean.

Remarks:
Pomfrets have compressed bodies, large head, and one single dorsal fin extending over length of body in some. The anterior dorsal fin spines are unbranched; anal spines lost, and 36-54 vertebrae present. They are found worldwide and can reach to a maximum length at 85 cm.

The family consists of two subfamilies, Braminae and Pteraclinae with seven genera and about 22 species.
