The anarhicadid Wolf fishes or Wolf-eels occur in the North Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, inhabiting the rocky bottoms. They have compressed and extremely elongated body, anatomically and ecologically similar to moray eels at high latitudes. These large benthic predators possess large jaws with strong anterior conical canines and large palatine molars for grasping and crushing crustaceans, clams, sea urchins, and fishes. Wolf fishes have large pectoral fins, small caudal fin, and cycloid scales. They can grow to a maximum length at 2.5 m.
The family comprises of two genera, Anarchichas (4) and Anarrhichthys ocellatus (5), with nine species.
