About This Family
Distribution:
Eastern North and South America, Africa, Kermadec Islands, and Hawaii.
Habitat:
Marine; deep water; tropical and subtropical waters.
Remarks:
The ariommatids are deep-sea fishes occurring in the tropical and subtropical coastlines of North and South America, Africa, Kermadec Islands, and Hawaii. They have large eyes, pelvic fins in adult, and two dorsal fins. The first dorsal has 10-12 spines, and second has 14-18 spines. Three anal short spines present, with 13-16 soft rays; 20-24 rays on pectoral fin; and caudal peduncle with two low , fleshy, lateral keels on each side. These species possess 30-32 vertebrae.
This family consists of only one genus, Ariomma, with about 7 species.
