Distribution:
Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, southern Africa, and southern South America.
Habitat:
Freshwater and diadromous, migrating between fresh and salt water.
Remarks:
The Galaxiids are small freshwater fishes, some of which are diadromous, that primarily live in cool temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere. Galaxiids are abundant in species and appear in many color variations. These fishes are scaleless; no teeth on upper and front jaw and no horny keel along abdomen. The lateral line is present and stretches along the body.
The family consist of 8 genera and 52 species.
