About This Family
Distribution:
Circumglobal
Habitat:
Marine
Remarks:
Oarfishes have a large and elongate ribbon-like body. While the dorsal fin base is extremely long and extends along the entire length of the body, the first few dorsal fin rays are bright red and exceed the remaining rays. They are characterized by having no scales, teeth, swim bladder, and anal fin. The species Regalecus glesne is considered to be the longest teleost, reaching 8 m in length, although some specimens have been reported to reach 12 m in length.

This family comprises two genera, Regalecus and Agrostichthys.
