About This Family
Distribution:
Tropical and subtropical Indian and Pacific Ocean.
Habitat:
Marine, brackish water.
Remarks:
Inhabiting in brackish water, the family Chanidae gets its name from the Greek word “chane,” which means anchovy. Milkfishes have compressed body, small mouth cleft, and jaws without teeth. They are valued as food fish in Southeast Asia, as many young are caught close to shore and reared in coastal ponds for human consumption. The female milkfish is highly fecund and can lay million of eggs.

The milkfish family contains only one species.
