Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian, and western and central Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:
Marine; mainly inhabits in depth between 200-600 m.
Remarks:
The family Berycidae has a circumglogbal distribution. Some are found in shallow water but most are mid-water fishes, inhabiting in depth between 200 – 600 m. Their body is relatively deep and compressed, with thick scales, large head, big round eyes, and powerful angled mouth. Generally they have one single spine in pelvic fin with 7-13 soft rays. Most species have heavy spines on the head and spiny and branched rays.
This family consists of two genera, Beryx and Centroberyx, with about nine species.
