About This Family
Distribution:
Antartic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific.
Habitat:
Marine.
Remarks:
The family Scopelarchidae is distributed worldwide in temperate and tropical waters. They are active, fast swimming fishes. The pearleyes are so-named for their large and tubular pearl-like eyes, oriented upward or slightly dorso-anteriorly. Adults are commonly found at depths between 500-1,000 m, larvae usually between 100-200 m. They are reported to grow to a maximum 23 cm.
This family comprises of four genera and 17 species.
