Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific.
Habitat:
Marine.
Remarks:
Lancetfishes have scaleless, slender, and subcylindrical bodies that are covered with pores. Their light organs and swim bladder are absent. Dorsal fin high and extending along the entire body with 29-48 rays; anal fin low developed with 12-18 rays; and pelvics abdominal with 8-10 rays. Lancetfishes have large mouths, developed teeth, and relatively long palatines.
Lancetfishes can grow to 2 m in Alepisaurus and 20 cm in Omosudis.
The family comprises two genera, Alepisaurus and Omosudis, with three species.
