Distribution:
Circumglobal, tropical to temperate seas.
Habitat:
Marine. Some entering freshwater.
Remarks:
Moray eels have extremely long, muscular, compressed body, sharp fanglike teeth, and no pectoral fins. The lateral line pores are positioned above head and before gill openings. Moray eels have well-developed dorsal and anal fins, sometimes extending to the tail fin and about 110-200 vertebrae.
Morays are mostly found in marine but occasionally entering freshwater, from the shoreline to 500 m. They feed on fishes and invertebrates which include crabs, shrimps, and octopus.
Maximum length 3.0 m.
The family comprises two subfamily, Uropterygiinae and Muraeninae, with about 15 genera and 185 species.
