Remarks:
Distributed worldwide, spiny eels are deep-sea fishes, living in deep waters (125-3500 m). They are characterized by having partly joined branchiostegal membranes, dorsal fin positioned near anus, and small scales with more than 50 longitudinal rows occur on each side. Some possess as many as three spinelike rays in each pelvic fin. They typically feed on benthic animals and small crustaceans.
This family contains three genera and 10 species.
