Distribution:
South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia to northern Australia.
Habitat:
Freshwater. Tropical waters.
Remarks:
Osteoglossids are found in the tropical waters of South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia to northern Australia. The family is comprised of two subfamilies, Heterotidinae and Osteoglossinae. Both families differ in their physical features, such as the absent or presence of barbells and cylindrical or compressed belly.
Some species possess suprabranchial organ and can breathe air; most are carnivorous. Pelvic fins are well behind base of pectoral fins; six pelvic rays; vertebrate 60 -100.
This family is comprised of five genera and eight species.
