Remarks:
The Alepocephalids get their common name of smooth-heads or slickheads from having scaleless heads with smooth skin covering them. These small deep-sea fishes are characterized by their small mouths and weak teeth. They possess long and large gill rakers, photophores, and large, thin cycloid scales, although some are scaleless. They are commonly found below 1000 m.
The Alepocephalidae family contains 23 genera with about 90 species.
