Distribution:
Circumglobal.
Habitat:
Marine, 300 and 1200 m (day) and 10 and 100 m (night).
Remarks:
Myctophids, also called laternfishes, are heavily preyed by numerous marine fishes and mammals. They are one of the most abundant and most often seen groups of deep sea fish. They are most abundance between 300 an 1200 m during the day and between 10 and 100 m during the night . The name laternfish suggest their distinctive feature of numerous bright light organs grouped together along their belly and sides.

Myctophidae belong to two subfamilies: Myctophinae and Lampanyctinae. There are 32 genera and 240 species.
