About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, eastern Pacific, Southwestern Indian, and New Zealand.
Habitat:
Inhabitating the waters of the continental shelf and upper continental slope.
Remarks:
The Merluccid hakes are found on both sides of the Atlantic ocean, including the Mediteranean Sea and parts of the Black Sea and in the eastern Pacific (from British Columbia to tip of South America). They have two dorsal fins, first with 8-13 rays and second notched and with 34-46 rays. They have a large mouth and long teeth. Their pyloric caeca (gut) is absent.
