About This Family
Distribution:
North America; tropical and subtropical waters of Central and South America.
Habitat:
Marine and freshwater temperate waters.
Remarks:
The neotropical silversides are in the Atherinopsidea family, including 108 species in 11 genera which are distributed throughout the temperate to tropical North, Central, and South America, and contain two subfamilies, Atherinopsinae and Menidiinae.
They have two widely separated dorsal fins; pectoral fins high on body. Their body is often translucent, with silvery lateral band. Although most species are marine or brackish water, about 50 species are confined to freshwater. The maximum reported length is 15 cm.
The family consists of 11 genera and about 108 species in two subfamilies, Atherinopsinae and Menidiinae.
