About This Family
Distribution:
Tropical to temperate seas, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean.
Habitat:
Marine.
Remarks:
The Microstomatidae family, common name is Pencil smelts, gets their name from the Greek word “mikros” = small and “stoma” = mouth. The physical features of the Pencil smelts include long, slender pencil-like body, with lateral line extending onto tail fin; large eyes that are doubled the length of their snout; 9-12 dorsal fin rays located closer towards the tail fin; 7-14 pectoral fin rays, and pelvic fin present.
The Microstomatidae family is comprised of 11 genera and about 38 species.
