About This Family

Morphology:
Sturgeons have five rows of large, bony scutes on their bodies, four barbels originate in front of mouth, and less than 50 gill rakers
(Fishbase ID Key). They possess a large swim bladder; most adults do not have teeth.
They can reach to 4.2 m or longer.
Remarks:The Acipenseridae are a Northern Hemisphere freshwater family that inhabits lakes and rivers with some species also extending their range to the ocean, returning to rivers and lakes to breed. This family consists of 4 genera with 28 species of which twenty-three are either threatened or endangered as a result of their highly valued meat and roe.
