About This Family
Distribution:
South Africa: Mozambique, Madagascar, and Comoros Archipelago. Indonesia: Celebes Sea, north of Sulawesi.
Habitat:
Steep rocky shores, open substrates.
Remarks:
The coelacanths are found in the southern Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Comoros Archipelago. In the late 1990s, the second species was discovered in an Indonesian fish market. Their robust body is covered with sizable bony scales that resemble tooth-like tubercles. First dorsal fin folding like a fan; second dorsal, anal and paired fins are roundish; fin rays are branched together; and spinal cord is supported by a large, notochord filled with fluid. The coelacanths are ovoviviparous, producing up to 59 eggs and about 5 young. An adult reaches a maximum length of 1.8 m.
