About This Family
Distribution:
Northern hemisphere.
Habitat:
Freshwater lakes and streams.
Remarks:
Perches have two dorsal fins, either separate or narrowly joined. They have 1-2 anal spines, however the second spine, if present, is usually very weak. The pelvic fins are thoracic with 1 spine and 5 soft rays. The gas bladder is absent in this family.
The maximum size is 90 cm and is achieved by the North American walleye, Sander vitreus. Most species in this family are much smaller.
This family comprises 10 genera and 201 species. There are three subfamilies: percinae, luciopercinae and etheostomatinae.
