About This Family

North America.
Habitat:
Freshwater lakes and streams.
Remarks:
Suborbital bones and lachrymal bones are present in sunfishes. The lowermost jawbone and the angular are penetrated by the lateral line (which is sometimes incomplete).
Most sunfishes are nest builders. The male hollows out a small hole with his tail and guards the eggs.
Sunfishes have been introduced to many areas and are important sport fishes. The maximum length in this family, achieved by the largemouth bass, is 83 cm. Some species, including Lepomis macrochirus, are used in physiological and ecological experimental work.
This family comprises 8 genera and 31 species.
