About This Family
Distribution:
Worldwide in tropical to temperate oceanic waters.
Habitat:
Epi- to bathypelagic, in depths from 100 to 2,000 m.
Remarks:
Manefishes are deep-bodied, with a sail-like dorsal fin, elongate pelvic fins, and a short snout. The dorsal and pelvic fins fit into grooves in the body when depressed. The dorsal fin has a long base, originating on the head, and there are no anal-fin spines.

These fishes are associated with members of the order Siphonophora (colonial animals resembling jellyfish), often stealing food from them, or feeding on the siphonophores themselves.

This family comprises two genera, (Caristius and Platyberyx) and about 5 species. Not much information is available for this family; all species in this family are rare.
