Flagtails are small silvery fishes that earn their name due to their striped or spotted forked caudal fins. The dorsal fin is deeply notched, and the dorsal and anal fins have a scaly sheath.
Flagtails have fine teeth in the jaws (arranged in bands) and on the roof of the mouth. As nocturnal predators, they feed on small planktonic crustaceans.
The family Kuhliidae comprises 1 genus (Kuhlia) with 10 species.
