About This Family
Distribution:
Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Habitat:
Dwell on the bottom, from inshore shallow waters to depths of 2800 m.
Remarks:
Fathead Sculpins are tadpole-shaped fishes with large heads and tapered bodies. The body is either naked or covered with prickly plates. The prevomerine teeth may be present or absent, the palatine teeth are alwasy absent. The lateral line is reduced and has less than 20 pores.
Maximum length in this family is achieved by Psychrolutus paradoxus, which reaches 65 cm SL.
This family comprises two subfamilies, Cottunculinae and Pyschrolutinae. There are 8 genera and 35 species.
